TAMBORINE MOUNTAIN QLD 4272
Queensland citizens draws to the attention of the House our call for limiting the human population expansion on the mountain. This plateau is only four kilometres wide, eight long and 550 metres above sea level. Currently the population is 8,538 and growing rapidly as developers clear forests and wildlife.
The plateau has five national rainforest parks with streams and waterfalls. Witches Falls was the first national park in Queensland. Development is encroaching on all sides. Flora and fauna have been impacted and a steep increase of wildlife 'roadkill.' There are no reticulated water systems or septic.
There are ancient Cycad groves that can live up to 1,000 years and Piccabeen palm forests. The name Tamborine is related to the native finger-lime, it is of significance to the indigenous first nation people of this area. A few unique wildlife includes the Lyrebird, red tailed cockatoo, echidna, wallaby, platypus, goanna and koala. The colourful Birdwing butterfly is unique to the Mountain; it's vine for egg laying is disappearing. 'Lonely Planet' rated Tamborine Mountain in the top 10 regions in the world. Birdlife International has designated the Mountain an important area.
Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to do all within its power to restrict further development and population growth on Tamborine Mountain and preserve what remains of this rich and unique place for tourism and future generations.
