The Opening of Parliament is a significant event in Queensland’s parliamentary calendar. This marks the 58th occasion since 1860 that Members have gathered to begin a new term in service to those who elected them.

Following a general election, there are three essential steps before the Assembly can commence its work:

  1. Summons by the Governor – This officially sets the time and date for the Parliament's meeting.
  2. Swearing-In & Election of the Speaker – All Members are sworn in, and a Speaker is elected to lead the Assembly.
  3. Opening of Parliament – The Governor, as the Crown’s representative, delivers an opening speech, signifying the beginning of a new parliamentary term.

These steps ensure that Members of Parliament are prepared to represent and serve the people of Queensland.
