about the bill
Parliament is seeking a greater degree of fairness in the management of residential tenancy databases. Since 2004, the residential rental property market in Queensland has grown significantly, resulting in increased competition for accommodation. The growth of the market has led to greater use of residential tenancy databases, significantly affecting the ability of listed persons to secure rental accommodation. The Bill seeks to introduce national uniform law on residential tenancy databases to ensure they’ll be used fairly by lessors and agents. The committee invites anyone interested in this proposal to make a written submission to explain how the proposal will affect them.
The Minister for Community Services, Housing and Minister for Women, Hon Karen Struthers MP, introduced the Bill on 10 May 2011.
See: Minister’s explanatory speech.
On 17 June 2011 the Legislative Assembly, on the motion of Ms Judy Spence MP, resolved:
That notwithstanding new Part 5 of standing orders in the amendments agreed to yesterday not commencing until 1 August 2011, that the following bills be referred to the committees indicated, and the new processes contained in new Part 5 of standing orders shall apply to those bills—
(b) The Residential Tenancies and Rooming Accommodation Amendment Bill 2011 be referred to the Community Affairs Committee;
