Demountable classrooms built with asbestos-containing materials at Shomcliffe State School
Eligibility - Electors of the Division of Sandgate25 Swan Street
SHORNCLIFFE QLD 4017
The petition of electors of the Division of Sandgate draws to the attention of the House the presence of demountable
classrooms built with asbestos-containing materials at Shomcliffe State School that are currently used for Year 1, 2 and 3
classes and are potentially hazardous to students, teachers and parents.
Your petitioners therefore request the House to have the demountable classrooms removed and replaced with a new,
double storey building to accommodate Year 1,2 and 3 classes and also incoming preparatory year students in 2007. The
asbestos-containing demountable classrooms will continue to deteriorate with time and removal of these buildings will
prevent them posing a health threat to students, teachers and parents. The new double storey building must comply with
Education Queensland policy by being constructed of asbestos-free materials. The request for a double storey building is
made because this will be the most efficient way to accommodate incoming preparatory year students in 2007 and
minimize the amount of playground space taken through the building of new classrooms.
