The Petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House serious safety concerns regarding access to Glenwood State School and traffic conditions on the Bruce Highway through Glenwood.

Parents, carers, students and community members face daily risks due to high-speed traffic travelling through the school zone and township, with limited warning for speed reduction. This creates dangerous conditions for students, pedestrians, school buses, and families entering and exiting the school.

These concerns were heightened following a recent fatal crash near the school, where highway closures prevented parents from accessing their children, including those who had witnessed traumatic events. The lack of an alternative access route left families unable to reach or support their children during an emergency.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to:

  1. Investigate and implement a reduction in speed limits through Glenwood and the Glenwood State School zone, with improved signage and enforcement;
  2. Consider additional traffic safety measures, including traffic signals at the school entrance; and
  3. Reopen or establish a secondary access route, including the connection of Murphy’s Road to Arborsixteen Road, to provide safe and reliable access to the school, particularly during emergencies.
