The Petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House escalating concerns surrounding oversight and management of Tablelands Regional Council.

Key areas of concern include:

  • Divestment / disposal of a large number of community assets including public toilets.
  • Disproportionate, sequential, rates increases.
  • Creation of multiple new highly remunerated management and advisor positions, (whilst existing wages and entitlements cost already substantially higher than neighbouring council).
  • Consultation not being inclusive, meaningful and transparent as required under the Local Government Act. Including the broader community and providing for real input.
  • Significant increase in ordinary council meeting agenda items conducted in closed sessions. This includes matters in the public interest including the divestment of assets.
  • Lack of transparency around decision making processes.
  • Undisclosed cost of the Prior’s Creek development.
  • Lack of disclosure of potential conflicts of interest.

Some ratepayers have signalled their intention to withhold the payment of rates due to serious concerns over the governance and actions of council.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to do all in its power to appoint an administrator to oversee and investigate the operations, management and governance of Tablelands Regional Council. To ensure compliance with the Local Government Act 2009, and to help restore public confidence in the organisation.
