The Petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House that the Brisbane City Council’s Wynnum Centre Suburban Renewal Plan would allow buildings of up to 15 storeys in the Wynnum CBD.
The community is deeply concerned that this proposal enables significant increases in density without the necessary infrastructure to support it. There is no clear, funded commitment to upgrades for public transport, local roads, water and sewerage, health services, schools, or public open spaces.
Petitioners believe the plan is inconsistent with the State Planning Policy, particularly in relation to liveable communities and the coordinated delivery of infrastructure.
The proposal also risks undermining Wynnum’s established coastal village character, including its recognised “tin and timber” identity which is highly valued by residents and visitors.
In addition, existing expectations for meaningful public open space appear to be weakened, with reliance placed on undefined and unfunded concepts such as an “urban common” and a Florence Street “green corridor.”
Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to call on the Minister to refuse the proposed plan; or at a minimum require that any approval is contingent on the demonstrated delivery and readiness of essential infrastructure including transport capacity, local road networks, water and sewerage services and public open spaces and does not permit buildings of up to 15-storeys unless and until that infrastructure is in place and capable of supporting the increased density.
