The Petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House that the Fighting Antisemitism and Keeping Guns out of the Hands of Terrorists and Criminals Amendment Act 2026 creates crimes for people saying political ideas and ideals.

Australia is a party to seven core international human rights treaties. The right to freedom of opinion and expression is contained in articles 19 and 20 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).

The High Court has inferred a freedom of political communication primarily from sections 7 and 24 of the Constitution.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to repeal the Fighting Antisemitism and Keeping Guns out of the Hands of Terrorists and Criminals Amendment Act 2026.
