The Petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House the use of emergency services resources rescuing people that knowingly drive through flood waters. This not only reduces emergency response capabilities it costs the residents of Queensland extra money collected from state revenue, and most importantly, causes emergency rescue workers unnecessary risk to their own lives. Some drivers think they are able to make a decision but do not fully take into consideration a realistic risk assessment.
Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to do all within its power to bring into legislation that drivers who knowingly drive through flood waters unnecessarily, pay a penalty to cover the cost associated with their rescue. This penalty needs to be advertised not only under the current slogan of "If it's flooded, forget it" but also that each offender will be fined a rescue fee if they ignore the warnings and cross flooded roads. After the rescue reports are filed and investigated, drivers found negligent should incur a financial penalty.
