Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House, the substantial and unreasonable 24-hour-a-day noise, stemming from the Pacific Motorway (M1) at Exit 41 Adjacent to Brookside Circuit, Ormeau. Since the full upgrade of the Exit 41 Interchange, M1 noise is causing significant discomfort for residents residing in the area known as Brookside Circuit.

Since the upgrade, the absence of sound barriers has had a significant negative impact on Basic Quality Living Standards (BQLS) for residents of Brookside Circuit in particular. Sleep deprivation 24 hours a day and particularly from 4am, when traffic builds towards peak hour, is disturbing normal sleep patterns, which is a proven health detriment.

Despite noise mitigation strategies on their own properties, in addition to the noise level causing residents to lose sleep, they are also forced to raise radio and television volumes to unreasonable levels to hear them and also to drown out M1 noise.

Residents are aware that when upgrades to sections of the M1 occur, the government must consider noise impacts and reduce the impact on noise affected residences. Brookside Circuit is at the very beginning of the Exit 41 northbound off ramp and adjacent to the extended southbound on ramp.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to do all in its power to have noise amelioration barriers installed, as a matter of high priority, adjacent to the Brookside Circuit residential area, to mitigate the level of noise pollution, particularly as a direct result of the recent upgrade to Exit 41.
