Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House:

  1. The ongoing community safety issues in Boorook Street, Buddina, caused by a minority of public housing tenants in the Boorook Street public housing unit complex;
  2. Large furniture items have been thrown off the balconies putting people's lives at risk;
  3. A murder occurred on site in 2016;
  4. Neighbours including other public housing tenants are living in fear because of incidences regularly occurring requiring police visits;
  5. The State Government's lack of action to transfer or evict misbehaving tenants from the Boorook Street public housing unit complex;
  6. Testimony before the Commonwealth Parliamentary Committee that produced the (Out of reach? The Australian housing affordability challenge - report) from Mr Damien Walker, Department of Housing and Public Works, Queensland, referred to the particular benefits that community housing providers offer. He mentioned that Queensland and the other jurisdictions saw great value in having community housing providers closely involved in property and tenancy management because of their agility, local knowledge and ability to deliver 'a greater level of wraparound service and support.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to immediately:

1) transfer the management of the public housing unit complex located in Boorook Street to a community housing provider that will ensure community safety matters are dealt with swiftly, tenants are held responsible for their behaviour and wrap around services are provided to tenants if necessary: and

2) install an onsite Manager at the public housing complex in Boorook Street, Buddina.
