Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House the recent New South Wales ban on the breeding of dolphins for entertainment. With these new regulations, Queensland is now the only state in Australia still breeding dolphins for entertainment and it’s becoming a global embarrassment.
Dolphins may live for up to 50 years in captivity, stuck in unnatural and barren environments while forced to perform. For intelligent animals, captivity is imprisonment. The public attitude towards live animals being used in entertainment has changed - people no longer wish to see animals being confined for spectacle. The only humane option is to end these ‘shows’ and support a sea sanctuary to retire the remaining dolphins.
Your petitioners therefore request the House to bring Queensland up to speed with the rest of Australia and ban the breeding and import of dolphins and other cetaceans for entertainment.
