Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House to the absence of Queensland legislation that permits adult adoption, which would formalise an existing parent-child relationship. There are several scenarios where adult adoption would benefit families, such as a step-child who has reached adulthood and grown fond of their step-parents, an adult adoptee who has found their birth family and wishes to be adopted by them or a way to create legal inheritance rights within a relationship. Adult adoption of a person 18 years of older is currently legal in Victoria, Western Australia and New South Wales.
Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to: legalise adult adoption in Queensland as has been done in other States.
