Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House the unnecessity of potentially allowing non-binary as an option when displaying sex on Queensland birth certificates.
At present, male and female are the two options available for display on birth certificates. However, the Department of Justice and the Attorney-General is currently reviewing the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Act which may see non-binary added as a third option. Non-binary is defined as a person who does not identify as male or female. Birth certificates are used as proof of identity and to identify physical attributes of the person and being classified as either a male or female is simply an aspect of a person’s identity.
Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to deny non-binary as an accepted third option to be displayed on birth certificates.
