The petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the
attention of the House that there are many full-time carers in Queensland
who have no backup to provide respite for themselves and are stretched to
the limit in terms of resources. In the event of the carer falling sick,
there is often only a two-hour window of backup available to them which
is manifestly inadequate. A good many of these carers are volunteers.

Your petitioners therefore request the House to establish a locum-style
service to provide a backup to the many carers in our community or,
alternatively, provide training for volunteers who are willing to help
with this very serious issue. Qualifications and workplace health and
safety issues would need to be addressed.
