TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland
Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House the following.
- The excessive Local Council rate increases following local council amalgamations and the financial hardship this is causing ratepayers;
- The 'double whammy' effect caused by increasing land valuations and rising council rates;
- The $100 million per year funding cutbacks from the State Government to Councils and the increased borrowing costs on Councils due to the State Government credit rating downgrade;
- The impost on ratepayers when Local Councils have to undertake compliance activities of the State Government.
Your petitioners therefore request the House to:
- Recognise the financial hardship placed on ratepayers from the State Government financial mismanagement and cutbacks on Queensland Councils;
- Call on the State Government to provide adequate financial assistance and better support to Queensland Councils to help them deliver better services to their communities - without the need for exorbitant rate increases.
