Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House: that many people with intellectual disabilities remain in beds in the old institutional mental health hospital, Baillie Henderson, Toowoomba, despite a State government announcement 16 years ago, that this practice would stop. Community Connections Toowoomba and Queensland Advocacy Inc, have been collaboratively advocating for community access opportunities for this group with eventual community living as their aims.
Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to: place a moratorium on moving these people until a “vision for their life in the community” is detailed, (in accordance with the government’s 10 year vision for people with disabilities); explain how this treatment of people with intellectual disabilities satisfies the UN’s convention of the Rights of Person with a Disability.
